Blue-Green Intelligence for Cities of the Future

We combine environmental research, consulting and digital intelligence to give cities the evidence they need to design and defend nature-based solutions.

The 5D Nature-Confidence Framework

Good urban nature doesn't fail in design. It fails in defence. EdenCT closes that gap. The 5D Framework builds the quantitative evidence base your project needs. Some projects need the full journey. Others need one precise entry point. Every step of the 5D framework creates a structured moment of dialogue. Between data and decision. Between disciplines that rarely share the same table. EdenCT generates the analytical foundation and brings the right people into contact with it. The framework adapts.

01

Diagnose

Diagnose

the status quo

Assess the site as an interconnected system using spatial data, dynamic models, and scientific rigour. Build a shared picture every stakeholder can see themselves in. Data, not opinions.

02

Deconstruct

Deconstruct

the mechanism

Forensic interpretation of model outputs to understand why results look the way they do. Sensitivity analysis and dynamic visualisation align stakeholders on mechanisms, not assumptions.

03

Design

Design

the options

Generate and iterate nature-based options as integrated systems, not individual interventions. Scenario modelling tests multi-functionality against real site constraints and stakeholder preferences.

04

De-Risk

De-Risk

the delivery

Run proposed designs back through diagnosis, closing the analytical loop. Pressure-test against performance KPIs, cost, and real-world constraints for informed, realistic solutions.

05

Defend

Defend

the decision

Transform analysis into dashboards and reporting that match political and budget timelines. Evidence becomes a living asset. Adaptable, updatable, and built for long-term accountability.

About

Dr. Peter Marcus Bach

Founder & Director, EdenCT

I take nature's quiet signals, ground myself, then build cities around health and resilience.

Nature has been an important force in my life, inspiring me, supporting me and grounding me. From six years old on a remote island building sandcastle cities with channels that worked with the tide to personal transformation in a period of significant personal challenge. I rebuilt with the support of nature. Nobody taught me that.

This instinct became a career. After a PhD in civil engineering at Monash University, I spent more than fifteen years researching across Australia, Europe and beyond, building simulation models and spatial tools that span urban water management, blue-green infrastructure, urban heat and biodiversity. The work has accumulated more than 5,000 citations in the peer-reviewed literature and spans projects and collaborators on four continents. And through all of it, the same question kept surfacing from engineering firms, architecture studios and city planners: can you give us the evidence to invest in nature in our cities with confidence?

EdenCT is my answer. The company I created is deliberately lean. The analytical core of every project is done in-house, but the real value materialises in collaboration. My role is to connect people who would otherwise talk past each other and to bridge between disciplines: planners, engineers, ecologists, architects and decision-makers working from different assumptions toward different ends. I do not deliver the final design. I deliver the clarity and rigour that makes getting there significantly faster for everyone at the table.

I am a consultant, researcher and educator based in Switzerland, but internationally active within the International Water Association and as founding chair of the iBGI Working Group and steering committee member of the IWA Nature-based Solutions Cluster. I am also the creator and host of The Grand Challengers Podcast.

Everything I do is in service of the same outcome: to collectively build cities where humans thrive with nature, not despite it.

Common Questions

What clients typically want to know before we begin.

Most environmental consultants describe what should be done. EdenCT focuses on why it will work and how to defend it. Every engagement is built around quantitative, spatial evidence that connects the physical reality of a site to the decisions being made about it. The result is not a recommendation you are asked to take on faith. It is an analysis you can put in front of a sceptical reviewer, a finance committee or a political stakeholder and stand behind.

EdenCT does not deliver the final design. That is the job of your architects, engineers and planners. What EdenCT delivers is the analytical foundation that makes getting to a good design significantly faster and less contentious. This includes spatial diagnostics, scenario modelling, performance assessments and structured evidence that aligns stakeholders around a shared understanding of the problem and the options available. The role is to remove the guesswork from the decisions your team still has to make.

EdenCT's clients are predominantly municipalities, urban planning and design practices, engineering consultancies and research institutions. They typically arrive with a specific nature-based solution challenge: a development requiring integrated water management, a corridor that needs climate adaptation, or a city building the quantitative case for greening at scale. EdenCT provides the analytical support to move from concept to a credible, defensible plan. Projects have been delivered at scales ranging from local site assessments to regional strategy.

EdenCT operates as a network model, not as a conventional firm. The analytical core of every project is completed in-house, but every project is also a collaboration. The role is to connect the disciplines and stakeholders that would otherwise work in isolation, and to provide a shared evidence base that gives planners, engineers, ecologists and decision-makers something concrete to engage with together. The portfolio is the product of that model: structured, ongoing dialogue across many teams, with EdenCT as the analytical thread running through it.

The 5D Nature-Confidence Framework is EdenCT's signature method for taking a nature-based solution from problem to defended decision. Five structured phases (Diagnose, Deconstruct, Design, De-risk and Defend) close the analytical loop between what a site needs, what options are available and what can be justified to the people who will fund and approve it. Each phase generates evidence, and each piece of evidence makes the next decision easier to make and harder to challenge. The framework is described in detail in the Mission section above.

Yes. EdenCT is based in Dübendorf, Switzerland, but has delivered projects and research across Europe, Australia, New Zealand and beyond. Collaboration at a distance is routine. The analytical work travels well.

The most useful first step is a conversation about your specific challenge. No lengthy brief is required. A 30-minute call is usually sufficient to understand the problem, what you already have and whether EdenCT is the right fit. From there, engagements are scoped clearly with defined deliverables before any work begins. Get in touch using the contact section below.
